Cincinnati - Circa May 2017: Procter & Gamble Corporate Headquarters. P&G is an American Multinational Consumer Goods Company II
Paper Bottle Company (Paboco) was officially launched in October 2019 as a result of the collaboration between renewable materials company BillerudKorsnäs and plastic bottle manufacturing specialist Alpla.
Its "paper bottle community" includes big Chile Mobile Number List names like The Coca-Cola Company, Carlsberg, L'Oreal and The Absolut Company, as well as new member P&G .
According to edie , P&G's senior vice president of R&D for the global fabrics and home care division, Jerry Porter, revealed that the company has been working behind the scenes with Paboco for about 12 months.
The result of this work is the first paper bottle prototype for the Lenor brand, which will be ready before a pilot launch of 100,000 units in Western European markets next year.
100,000 P&G paper bottles
Jerry Porter, senior vice president of R&D at P&G, said:
“We are doing this testing and learning to understand, across the entire value chain, what the key learnings are. 2022 is really our first step. We expect to have to make adjustments, but the intention is to extend this to more places and products, especially as we move to more generations. “We want to move as fast as we can.”
And while Porter was unable to reveal which markets the bottles will be tested in at this stage, nor information on when, precisely, in 2022 customers can expect to see them on shelves.
However, he outlined the main challenges posed by the change from a plastic bottle to the Paboco format for laundry products, such as Lenor fabric enhancer.
The current format is the company's first-generation design and consists of a pulp-based paper exterior and an internal barrier made of 100% recycled PET. Lenor bottles have a plastic cap. Overall, the result is a 30% reduction in plastic used by weight.
For our use case… we have to be able to keep the liquid in the container throughout the entire consumer experience, from start to finish.
It has to go from plants to retailers and then to consumers, where it has to be stable and not drip over a period of time under the sink.
Jerry Porter, senior vice president of R&D, P&G Global Fabrics and Home Care Division.

This long shelf life, together with the need for perfumes and other key ingredients to remain active, means that the packaging format needs a "high level of stability", especially for larger packages. Despite this challenge, Porter believes the Paboco solution is scalable and could “be more proudly used across P&G's portfolio over time.” The ultimate goal, he said, is to perfect the format to move to completely plastic-free packaging for some product lines.
P&G's commitments
P&G's overall plastic packaging commitments include halving the use of virgin plastics by 2030, across all product categories. The Fabric Care Europe division has a provisional ambition to reduce the use of plastic - including virgin and recycled - by 30% by 2025.
The Home Care Europe division is also going a step further and aims to not use virgin plastic at all from 2025. Other innovations to reduce the use of plastic that the consumer goods giant has tested are the bottles of Aluminum shampoo and conditioner refillable with flexible plastic bags.
A truly sustainable solution? P&G Paper Bottles
As noted, Paboco bottles are not yet a completely plastic-free solution, as they rely on the recycled PET barrier to prevent the contents from damaging the exterior.
Gittan Schiöld, Interim CEO of Paboco, stated that the intention is to move to a fully bio-based format for the second generation of packaging innovation, in which the unbonded PET barrier is replaced by a bonded bio-based alternative that can be recycled alongside with the pulp-based paper wrapper.
