What language does Artificial Intelligence speak? Above all, in English, but more and more efforts are being made to ensure that this technology is also developed in Spanish. This is what was reflected in the conferences on “Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence” organized by the RAE within the framework of the summer courses at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) in Santander. Experts in language and artificial intelligence debated at this meeting about how machines learn and use our language, the role of linguists in this task, the interest of technology companies or the RAE projects in this context. The conference was inaugurated by Santiago Muñoz Machado, director of the RAE, and Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, who highlighted that teaching Spanish languages to machines is a strategic priority of the Government.
Afterwards, a conversation took place about AI training in Spanish and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in which Marta Guerrero, computational linguist and coordinator of NLP projects at the Institute of Knowledge Engineering (IIC), participated. accompanied by Mercedes Sánchez, technical manager of CORPES (Corpus of 21st Century Spanish) of the RAE, and Alfonso Ureña, professor of Computer Chinese Student Phone Number List Science and president of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing. The latter highlighted the advances of PLN in all areas and sectors of society, which would not be possible without quality linguistic resources in our language , such as corpora. “Language is and must be at the center of our efforts to develop artificial intelligence, and vice versa,” he commented.
As Marta Guerrero highlighted, at the IIC we have been working on PLN in Spanish for more than 10 years. During this time, applications for automatic text classification, information extraction, sentiment analysis, etc. have been developed. “And a couple of years ago we decided to develop our own language model in Spanish within the framework of a research project, since at that time there was almost none in our language,” explained the expert. Given the transversality of Artificial Intelligence (AI), each area or sector must define its possibilities and limitations so that it is useful in each case. For this reason, the UAM-IIC Chair of Psychometric Models and Applications wanted to reflect on its application to the field of Human Resources in its 13th annual seminar, entitled Artificial Intelligence applied to the management of individual and organizational talent.
At the opening of the event, the work of the chair was highlighted to bring advances in the academic world closer to the real world. Firstly, Ricardo Olmos, Vice Dean of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at the Faculty of Psychology at the UAM, said that “the Chair gives psychometrics a social utility, for example, in the world of organizations. David Aguado , senior researcher and head of CAMTO at the Knowledge Engineering Institute, also stressed the effort to do applied research that can be transferred to society. And he highlighted the IIC's commitment to psychological measurement, to this transfer and to training in HR Analytics .
The co-directors of the chair were then in charge of introducing the theme of this edition. On the one hand, Francisco J. Abad said that “this was a scenario to think about the value that the new Artificial Intelligence tools bring us .” And Carmen García alluded to the link between the conferences, which propose “that AI be developed at the service of people , that it be a tool that improves the lives of citizens. The potential of open collaboration in organizations In the opening conference, Manuel Cebrián, Distinguished Researcher in the Department of Statistics and Associate Researcher at the UC3M-Santander Big Data Institute, focused on the potential of networked and collaborative response to critical threats to organizations, countries and even our civilization.
